Welcome to My Ultimate Hike Page
Thanks for visiting my Ultimate Hike page! This will be my 11th Ultimate Hike, and my son Greg will hike with me on Team Fiona!
I train for and hike these long, challenging hikes to raise funds to fight children's cancer and I need your help! Money you donate will support CureSearch for Children's Cancer, a national non-profit foundation whose mission is to fund and support targeted and innovative children's cancer research, with measurable results. Additionally, they are the authoritative source for information resources about children's cancer for families and their support systems.
The 5 kid warriors I hike specifically for are:
Daniel - Daniel is a young man (now 21) who survived acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) as a kid. He's the grandson of long-time family friends in Cincinnati. Daniel's dad was in a high school Sunday School class that I taught decades ago. Daniel's mom and dad hosted a "cure party" in 2006 after he was in remission long enough to be considered cured. Daniel hiked a 30 mile Ultimate Hike with me in 2017 - what an honor for me!
Cameron - Cam was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor (medulloblastoma) in 2008 when he was 6 years old and attending kindergarten. Following 6 weeks of daily radiation, weekly physical/occupational therapy, months of high-dose chemotherapy, multiple stem cell transplants, numerous blood transfusions, and many days in the hospital, he was cleared to return to school. In remission, Cam underwent quarterly MRI’s, but the cancer returned in early 2010. In late 2011, Cam went to be with Jesus. His remarkable outlook of thankfulness and joyfulness while facing adversity inspired others! He became known for his “Today is the best day ever!” exclamation.
Zack - Having just graduated 5th grade in June, 2010, Zack had a motor scooter accident. Within minutes of arrival at the ER in Wilmington, NC, he was in cardiac arrest. In surgery, a cancerous tumor (hepatoblastoma) on his liver was discovered. After enduring 7 more surgeries at UNC Chapel Hill, brain swelling, coma, ventilator for 24 days and over 50 units of blood, Zack made significant recovery in speech, walking and motor skills. Zack later had several months of treatment at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, then went to be with Jesus on May 28, 2011. Zack made the most of his days – being an awesome big brother and spending countless hours in outdoors activities. Zack’s dad said hiking the Ultimate Hike would have interested Zack. His attitude and actions taught others how to be more loving and forgiving – and to trust God, no matter what. I had the honor of hiking an Ultimate Hike with Zack's mom and brother in 2017...
Max - My cousin's grandson Max is currently in remission from his battle with AML cancer. After missing 18 months of in-school education while undergoing treatment and recovering his strength, he's back to skiing and schooling!
Fiona - Four year old Fiona has battled retinoblastoma for most of her young life. She is an incredibly sweet youngster whose grandparents live in our community. It is impossible to avoid smiling when with Fiona; her curiosity, friendliness and energy are contagious. She has become a favorite of the medical professionals who treat/examine her. Likewise, Fiona is - of course - the namesake of Team Fiona! We are proud to know her and hike in her honor.
