Please Sponsor me for the Ultimate Hike Challenge: Let's Tell Children's Cancer to Take a Hike!
THANK YOU for visiting my Ultimate Hike page!
Most people who know me are used to hearing about me participating in various types of endurance events. These events are usually geared towards my own personal health and fitness goals.
This year I am participating in an event that will benefit a cause MUCH larger than myself; I will be hiking to raise funds for children's cancer.
Shortly before I joined the military, I took a part time job proctoring G.E.D. tests for the New York State Department of Education; these tests I proctored were always administered in school buildings throughout the city, except one of them...
Because of my age at the time (18), it was thought by my manager that i would be well suited to connect with a 17-year-old hospitalized cancer patient named Chris who wanted to take his Equivalency Exam. It was unlikely that he was going to be able to return to school and wanted to reach his goal of graduating if he was unable to go into remission.
I was young, inexperienced and had not been subjected to Cancer directly really, especially from someone in my own age group.
There were special allowances made for him to take the test in his hospital room. I had to read him his questions because of loss of most of his sight. He often would "self-medicate" in the middle of our exam sessions and I would have to pack up and try again the next day.
There was a picture of him on his bedside table not even a year earlier looking strong with a look in his eyes that he was ready to take on the world.
I spent a bit over two weeks with him administering that test as well as getting to know who he was and had wanted to become; he shared alot with me.
He passed that exam, but unfortunately did not live long enough to hear the results.
I have carried thoughts of him and our conversations throughout the years of my life as I have grown and had children of my own.
I am hiking in memory of Chris and in efforts to bring hope to all the children still fighting who want to take on the world as he did.
The money I raise will support CureSearch for Children's Cancer, a national non-profit foundation whose mission is to fund and support targeted and innovative children's cancer research, with measurable results.
In addition, they are the authoritative source for information resources about children's cancer for families and their support systems.
Please, support me to change the odds for those children most at risk.
Thank you for helping me work tell children's cancer to take a hike!
