Dear family and friends,
And now we are three! My brother, B.A., my friend Maggie, and I are Team Grateful Tread. We will celebrate my daughter Julia’s ten-year cancer survivorship anniversary with a 28.3 mile hike on April 28, 2018. We will begin our trek on the Appalachian Foothills Trail at the Upper Whitewater Falls Overlook in North Carolina in the wee hours of the morning and make our way to Oconee State Park in South Carolina before nightfall. If that sounds like a hard day, it is nothing compared to the journey children fighting cancer face.
Consider the following from CureSearch:
-43 children are diagnosed with cancer everyday
-More than 400,000 children are in cancer treatment each year
-1 in 8 children with cancer will not survive
-60% of childhood cancer survivors suffer long-term and late effects of treatment
-In the last 20 years only 4 treatments have been specifically developed and approved for children
-Cancer is the #1 disease killer of children
Julia was diagnosed with stage three Wilms Tumor when she was five years old. Over the following six months she had chemotherapy, five different surgeries, including the removal of her right kidney and a portion of her liver, and thirteen days of radiation. She missed at least thirty-five days of school, all of her hair fell out, and she was hospitalized twice for partial bowel obstructions. Julia had a much easier road than most children with cancer. Today, at fifteen, she is a French horn and saxophone-playing honors student. She enjoys hanging out with her friends, reading, and listening to 20th century rock-n-roll.
As Team Grateful Tread, B.A., Maggie, and I are hiking to honor childhood cancer survivors like Julia, to remember children who have died, and to raise funds for CureSearch in support of its mission “to end childhood cancer by driving targeted and innovative research with measurable results in an accelerated time frame” so more children with cancer survive and lead long, healthy lives. As a team, we have committed to raising $7,500, and we need your help to do it. Visit our team page at http://www.curesearchevents.org/site/TR?fr_id=1541&pg=entry and find Team Grateful Tread. You can make a donation to the whole team or you can donate to one of us individually.
We thank you in advance for your generosity and support as we prepare to give childhood cancer the boot.
